What are balloon tethers?
When you schedule a balloon tether, we bring our hot air balloon to your location and inflate and operate the balloon onsite using ropes to hold the balloon in place during the time the balloon is in operation. A balloon tether is still classified as a flight operation, and all local and FAA regulations apply. A visit to the location may be required by the pilot.
How much space is required for a balloon tether?
For a balloon tether, we need an area about the size of a baseball field or 200 feet by 200 feet. This area must be clear of any obstacles of any kind and must be able to be driven on by our vehicles.
How many people can ride in one hour?
On average, we can take the balloon up to the top of the ropes and back down in an average of 5 minutes. This would ideally mean that we could make 20 trips in one hour. If we take 2-3 people on each trip, then you will average 40 passengers in one hour.
What is the cost of a balloon tether?
Balloon tethers cost $2,000 for the first two hours, then $500 for each additional hour. A travel fee will be added for areas outside of Iredell County. A contract and/or non-refundable deposit may be required.
**We love church events Vacation Bible Schools, etc. Please ask about special discounts!**
Why does it cost so much?
Hot air balloons are designed to fly, not be held in place. Holding a hot air balloon in place will generate stress on the balloon. One hour of tether time on a hot air balloon is generally equivalent to 3 hours of normal wear on the aircraft as if it were in normal flight operations. That same aircraft used in normal flight operations will generate around $650 of revenue. Since the tether operations are 3 times as hard, we need to charge more.
What weather conditions are needed?
We can not operate our balloon in rain, with a thunderstorm within 50 miles, and in winds above 7 mph. Keep in mind, we monitor wind speeds at different altitudes when making this decision. We will not operate the balloon in temperatures above 90 degrees. We will make a joint decision about showing up on the day of the event, but the pilot's decision to operate the balloon is always final.
How to schedule a hot air balloon tether?
Please text or email us about scheduling a balloon tether.
What else do I need to worry about?
We have all the required insurance and waivers needed. Keep this in mind, and we can not say this enough. The entire operation is dependent on the weather.
